Retired US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor closed out the four-day National Governors Association conference with a speech focusing on judicial independence. She, among other attendees, had the chance to sample Michigan wines at receptions held at Brys Estate Vineyards and at Chateau Chantal yesterday evening.
During a stop at the Black Star Farms table she graciously agreed to a photo-op with Don Coe while sipping Arcturos Sur Lie Chardonnay – which she proclaimed “delicious.” When asked which way she had voted on the direct shipping case, she said, “against, because I thought it was a states’ rights issue. But I’m happy with the outcome.” She had never travelled to northwest Michigan before and thought it would be a terrific vacation site for her and her husband.
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern also stopped by to say hello. They sampled the Arcturos Dry Riesling, and they’re smiling.
